    ACL Tear Surgery

An ACL injury occurs when the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee is overstretched or torn. A partial or total tear is possible. ACL injuries most commonly occur during sports or activities that require the person to stop suddenly, or change the direction of movement, jumping etc such as soccer, basketball, football, among others.

    Symptoms of ACL Tear Surgery

When ACL damage occurs, many patients hear a pop sound in their knee. Your knee may expand, become unstable, and too painful to bear weight on. ACL Injury Symptoms The following are common signs and :

    1. The sensation of a loud pop or “popping” in the knee.
    2. Pain that is unbearable and makes it impossible to continue doing things.
    3. Rapid enlargement.
    4.  Range of motion loss.
    5.  With weight-bearing, a sense of instability

    Risk Factors

Several factors enhance your chances of tearing your ACL, including:

    • In females, because of differences in anatomy, muscle strength, and hormonal impacts.
    • Soccer, football, basketball, gymnastics, and downhill skiing participants can get this injury.
    • Inadequate air conditioning
    • Using incorrect movement patterns, such as squatting with the knees inward.
    • Putting on shoes that don’t fit properly
    • Using sporting equipment that isn’t well-maintained, such as ski bindings that aren’t correctly adjusted
    • Playing on a synthetic surface

    Causes of ACL Injury

Ligament, a connective tissue, joins two bones. It’s one of two ligaments in the center of your knee that cross. The common problem due to which ACL injuries commonly occur are sports and fitness activities that give stress on the knee:

    • Abruptly slowing down and altering course (cutting)
    • Pivoting while keeping your foot firmly on the ground
    • A clumsy landing after a jump
    • Halting or stopping movement
    • Taking a direct strike to the knee or colliding with another object, such as a football tackle

Torn down of the ligament may partially or fully tear the tissue. A little injury to the ligament can result into a stretch.

    When to See A Doctor?

If any injury to your knee develops signs or symptoms of an ACL injury, seek medical attention right once. The knee joint is made up of a complicated system of bones, ligaments, tendons, and other tissues that all operate together. To evaluate the severity of the damage and receive effective treatment, it’s critical to have a quick and correct diagnosis.

How Do We Diagnose ACL Injury?

Your doctor will want to know the specifics of your knee injury. They’ll examine both knees to discover if the one that’s bothering you appeas different. They have the option of ordering any of the following:

Tests : Your doctor may instruct you to lie down on your back and bend your hips and/or knees at different angles. They’ll then gently shift you around by placing their hands on various places of your leg. Any abnormal movement of the limb could be a sign of ACL injury.

X-ray : Although X-rays don’t show soft tissues like the ACL, your doctor may want to rule out fractured bones.

Ultrasound or MRI : Both soft tissue and bone can be seen during these examinations. If your ACL is destroyed, it should show up in the photographs.

Arthroscopy : This translates to “search the joint.” An orthopaedic surgeon will create a small cut in your skin during the examination. They place an arthroscope (a pencil-sized gadget with a lighting system and lens) into the joint.

On a TV screen, the camera projects an image of the joint. Your doctor can determine what type of injury you have and, if necessary, repair or remedy it.

    Treatment for ACL injury

It depends on the severity of your injuries. Here are some of the alternatives you may be given by your doctor :

First Aid – If your damage is minimal, all you need to do is apply ice to your knee, elevate your leg, and take some time off your feet. Wrapping an ace bandage across your knee will help to minimize swelling. Crutches might assist in removing weight from your knee.

Medications – Anti-inflammatory medications can aid in the reduction of swelling and pain. Your doctor may advise you to take over-the-counter drugs or prescribe a stronger medication. Your doctor may inject steroid medication into your knee if you’re in a lot of discomforts.

Brace for the knees – When running or participating in sports, some persons with a torn ACL can get away with wearing a brace on their knee. It provides further assistance.

Physical therapy – It is a type of treatment that involves the use of your knee back in functioning order, you may need to do this a few times a week. You’ll undertake exercises to strengthen the muscles around your knee and help you restore a complete range of motion during your sessions. You may be sent home with some exercises to do on your own.

Surgery – If your ACL is badly torn, if your knee gives way when you walk, or if you’re an athlete, your doctor may recommend this. The injured ACL will be removed and replaced with tissue to allow a new ligament to develop in its place. People who have had surgery can often return to sports within a year with the help of physical therapy.
