Abdominal ultrasound – It is the most commonly used diagnostic technique in which doctors move a device called transducer across your abdominal area. This device sends signals to a computer, which creates images that show the structures in your abdomen. But in some cases, it might miss small stones.
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) – This procedure can help identify smaller stones. In this procedure, your doctor inserts a thin, flexible tube-endoscope-through your digestive tract via mouth. A mini transducer in the tube captures the images of surrounding tissue.
Blood tests – Blood tests may help diagnose infections, jaundice, pancreatitis or other complications caused by gallstones.
In few cases, doctors may have to advise some additional tests such as oral cholecystography, a hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid (HIDA) scan, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), etc.
Gall stones can cause injury to the tissue, lead to infection, or cause blockage. In order to avoid these complications, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove gallbladder. Once it is removed, bile flows directly from your liver into your small intestine.
Earlier doctors used to perform open surgery, which involved large incision. But now, the gall bladder can be removed laparoscopically. In this, few small incisions are made on the right side of your abdomen. The surgeon uses one incision to insert a laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera on the end. This shows your gallbladder on a screen. The surgeon removes the gallbladder through another small incision.
The procedure laparoscopic cholecystectomy is less invasive, helps in faster recovery, and a shorter hospital stay.
